Next steps for spring admission

Congratulations on your admission to Michigan State University for the spring 2026 semester! Classes begin in January, and your place in the incoming spring class is guaranteed. Follow the steps below to confirm your enrollment and prepare for your MSU experience.

Important note about spring admission:

If you accept your spring 2026 offer and take college courses at another institution during fall 2025, your status will change to a transfer student. While you will still be welcome to enroll at MSU in the spring, you will no longer qualify for first-year financial aid or scholarships, including the Spartan Tuition Advantage. Your transcript will also be reviewed before enrollment.

We’re sharing this now so you can make fully informed decisions about your fall plans.

Next steps

  1. Accept your offer of admission and pay the $250 acceptance fee (formerly the Advanced Enrollment Deposit) by October 15 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Log in to your student portal to confirm your spot.
  2. Have your final high school transcript sent directly to the MSU Office of Admissions by October 15. Use Parchment or another secure delivery service. Transcripts must include your graduation date and all final senior grades. Faxed or emailed transcripts are not accepted.
  3. If you take college courses this fall (which will change your status to transfer), your final college transcript must be sent directly to MSU as soon as fall grades are posted. IMPORTANT: Your offer of admission is contingent on continued academic success. A significant decline in your high school performance or a college GPA below 2.0 may affect your spring enrollment.

Spring admission FAQs

Some applicants, including you, were offered spring 2026 admission due to limited space in the fall class. All spring-admitted students are fully admissible to MSU, and you are currently on a waitlist for fall 2025. If space becomes available, you may receive a fall offer. Otherwise, your spring admission is secure and will be finalized in your admissions account after the fall waitlist closes on September 15, 2025.

Due to an exceptionally high number of qualified applicants, MSU has limited space for the fall 2025 semester. For this reason, some students were offered spring admission, beginning in January 2026. At this time, no fall spaces are available for spring-admitted students.

No, the fall 2025 waitlist is now closed and we look forward to welcoming you for spring 2026. Additional documents or test scores will not have an impact on your admission status.

  • Accept your spring offer and submit your acceptance fee by Oct. 15, 2025 (11:59 p.m. ET).
  • Submit your final high school transcript by Oct. 15, 2025 (keep reading for more information).
  • If you’re considering taking courses this fall, please read the next answer for an important financial aid consideration.

Yes, but there are a couple of important considerations. If you take fall college courses, you’re still welcome to enroll at MSU in spring, but you will be considered a transfer student and your transcript will be reviewed (although you will not need to reapply). However, please note: If you take classes at another institution, you will not be able to maintain your status as a first-year student or your eligibility for first-year financial aid and scholarships, including the Spartan Tuition Advantage.

If you choose to take courses elsewhere before enrolling at MSU, we recommend working with an academic advisor at that institution. Suggested courses include entry-level classes in math, social sciences and/or the humanities. Use transfer.msu.edu to check which courses will transfer.

Please note: If you take courses at another institution, you will be considered a transfer student at MSU and your transcript will be reviewed (although you will not need to reapply). You will also not be able to maintain your status as a first-year student or your eligibility for first-year financial aid and scholarships, including the Spartan Tuition Advantage

If you take courses at another institution and enroll as a transfer student, you must achieve an overall collegiate GPA of 2.0 or higher to retain your spring offer at MSU.

Yes. Admission for spring can be withdrawn due to

  • a final high school transcript that shows low performance;
  • a fall college GPA below 2.0 (if applicable);
  • missing deadlines or required documents.

If you're experiencing any academic difficulties, please contact MSU Admissions before orientation to discuss your eligibility.

Request that your transcript is sent through Parchment or another secure service. Transcripts must

  • be sent by Oct. 15, 2025;
  • Include your graduation date;
  • be sent directly (no emails or faxes).

MSU awards AP credit only based on AP exam scores submitted directly by the College Board. AP test credits accepted by another college won’t automatically transfer to MSU.

You’ll receive information about orientation and course registration via your MSU email before spring 2026. Orientation includes an advising session and class registration.

Yes. All spring students must complete New Student Orientation (NSO), which includes a required online component and an optional in-person session.

To be considered for financial aid, complete the FAFSA as soon as possible. Financial aid information will be provided once available, and first-year scholarships and aid are only available if you do not take college courses in the fall (because you would then be considered a transfer student).

Housing is not guaranteed for spring students, but MSU will do its best to accommodate students looking for housing. More details will also be available in fall 2025.

Possibly. Students living on campus in the fall have the first opportunity to make spring room changes. If space allows or your friend is willing to move, you may be placed together.

Most majors are available for a spring start, but a few are not.

  • Lyman Briggs College: Spring admission is not available, and your major will default to Exploratory.
  • College of Music: Spring admission is not available, and you must apply for fall 2026 by Dec. 1, 2025, and complete an audition in January or February of 2026.
  • Interior Design: Spring admission is not available, and your major will default to Agriculture and Natural Resources – Exploratory.

The availability of your major preference does not affect your general admission to MSU. You may pursue your original major later if you meet the college’s criteria.

If you will have 28 or more credits completed before starting at MSU, you may need to meet additional requirements for restricted majors. A restricted major is a major that has additional admission requirements, including the successful completion of specific prerequisite coursework, a competitive grade point average or a required number of credits. Check if your major is on the list.
