After you apply

You can track the status of your application by logging in to your account. You will need your applicant email (the email associated with your online application) and your password. If you do not know your password, use our password reset system.

MSU will begin loading Common App applications mid-August. Once the university begins loading applications, instructions for logging into your admissions account will be emailed to you once our office has downloaded your application into our database. Depending on the volume of applications, this email could take from two to 10 business days to arrive. Status information in your account will be updated daily on business days, but note that it can take seven to 10 business days for information to be processed and reflected in your account once it has been received.

International applicants

It can take several weeks for testing agencies to send scores, so standardized test results may not show in your account until four to six weeks after you submit a request for scores to be sent to MSU. Please be patient and check your account regularly for updates.

Transfer applicants

After submitting your application, there is one more step you need to take as a transfer student in order for your application to be considered complete. Have your official college-level transcript(s) sent directly from each school or institution attended to MSU. This includes transcripts from any dual enrollment or early/middle college programs and, if you have completed less than 28 semester credits, your official high school transcripts as well. These can be sent through online services or by U.S. mail.

If you have already applied to Michigan State University and would like to defer your application to a future semester, log in to your account and click on the "Delay admission" or “Change entry term” link in the account tools. For more information on deferring your enrollment, including impacts to scholarships, financial aid and admittance to direct admit programs, visit the delay admission/change entry term page.

After applying, you can change your major selection by logging into your account and clicking the “Change major” link in the account tools. Please note that majors can only be changed in accordance with the following criteria.

First-year criteria

After submitting the application, fall first-year applicants have until May 1 to change their major preference in their account. Any student who applies, or is admitted, after May 1 cannot change their major preference until New Student Orientation (NSO).

Transfer criteria
After submitting the application, transfer applicants may not change their major for any reason until after they have been admitted to the university. After admission, major changes will need to be coordinated with your academic adviser at your New Student Orientation (NSO) and will be subject to department approval.

If you decide you are not going to attend MSU, please cancel your admission to make space for another student. Log in to your account and click on the “Cancel application” link in the account tools. If you have already submitted your Advanced Enrollment Deposit (AED), MSU will automatically process a refund upon cancellation of your application, provided that you are an incoming first-year student and you cancel before May 1 preceding your fall semester enrollment.

Note: The AED is only refundable for first-year students enrolling for fall semester. First-year students enrolling for spring and summer semesters, and all transfer students, will not receive a refund.
